One of the types of job interviews freelancers are familiar with is the mail interview.
This is because most of the job interviews conducted for freelancers are done virtually, and one of such ways is through mail interviews.
For a client to conduct a job interview for you via mail, there are some things you need to take note of.
And so, for every freelancer out there who want to know more on how to ace a mail interview, here are some of the things you need to consider:
- Language: you need to ensure that you use a formal language that is appropriate for the occasion. You need to write in a formal and professional manner and get your message across effectively and simply.
- Brevity: as much as you need to pass your message across clearly, you also need to ensure that you don’t make your responses too long, having lots of redundant words in them. If you have been asked to talk about why you should be hired for a particular position, for instance, you need to give your points in a straightforward yet detailed manner that at the same time won’t bore the employer or hiring manager.
- Have a Goal in Mind: don’t get carried away when answering the interview questions that you forget the reason for the interview in the first place. For instance, are you being interviewed to be a graphic designer for some specific kinds of projects for a company? You should put this in mind and ensure your answers correspond to the reason you are being interviewed. When you know your goal, it makes it easy to know how to answer the questions.
- Keywords: it is also important to note that there are some important keywords you need to include in your correspondence, that can speak to your prospective employer or hiring manager. What are the kind of words that best describe the value you will be offering? What kind of words will help you pass your message acrosss lucidly?
- Prompt response: in some quarters, it has been said that people need to reply emails within 24 hours. In some job email interviews, the hiring manager or employer will state the time frame with which you need to reply the mail.
- Grammar: ensure that you avoid grammatical errors. You can even install a tool like Grammarly on your device or use it as an extension on your web browser, to help you edit your works.
- Focus on the important things you need to pass across: while you are telling the hiring manager or the employer about yourself or while answering a question, ensure that you don’t forget to include some important details relevant to the job you are applying for.
- Format right: good formatting makes your work or what you have typed neat, legible, and easily presentable. Ensure that you format well.
- Use a good signature: your email signature is a way you can easily market yourself and show that you are a professional. Don’t just sign off shabbily, tie the ends of your email well and sign off properly.
- Edit: check again. Check the instructions given; have you followed it? Check your grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and so on. If you need to send a document along with your mail, have you checked if you have attached the document? etc. these are some of the things you need to consider.
